4 Ways to Prevent Dry Hair Extensions in the Winter

Congratulations! You finally took the plunge and decided to invest in your first set of extensions. With this newfound beauty power comes great beauty responsibility. To keep your new beautiful hair looking hydrated and beautiful, there are a few tips to keep in mind, especially as we approach the driest season of the year.

Get Brushing

Get an extension brush. This is vital. You will literally rip your head of hair out if you try and brush them continuously with a normal brush. Brush through your hair extensions to remove any knots — you want your hair extensions to be as tangle free as possible. Start at your ends and work your way up to the scalp. Brushing your hair will also allow you to distribute your natural hair oils to maintain softness and shine.

Dry Your Extensions The Right Way

If you are wearing semi-permanent hair extensions, gently dry your hair extensions on a low heat setting, brushing gently with a hair extension hairbrush. For professionally installed extensions, you may also consider investing in a micro drying towel. Always fully dry your bonds, you can leave the ends dry naturally if you want, but it is very important to keep the roots bone dry. Another tip is to put your hairdryer on the cold setting, as it is once again, you guessed it, better for the bonds.

Try A Weekly Hair Mask

Hair masks are an excellent way to infuse moisture back into your hair. Try a deep moisturizing hair mask at least once a week. Fully coat the hair from the mid lengths to the ends. Never condition the roots as you’ll cause the bonds to unravel over time, instead, condition only the ends, this is all you need anyways. This must be on DRY hair, as this will allow the hair to soak up more product. When rehydrating your hair extensions, it is best to keep this treatment on for as long as possible. The longer the treatment is exposed to the hair, the more the hair will be able to absorb.

Use The Right Shampoo

.

Choose a natural or extension friendly shampoo. Stay away from any shampoo with Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) as this often damages and corrodes the bonds. Specially formulated  Shampoo to maintain the beauty of hair extensions and wigs.
